Legionairre

The picture on the left is an example of a Roman Legionairre in full battle dress. Although we do not use "real" weapons in Darkon, this picture is used to illustrate how the weapons we do use were developed.

A. Pilum (pee-lum) - Used to pierce shields and make them unweildy and unusable.  The shaft would bend (or break off entirely in later models) to make it impossible to through the pilum back.  The Holy Roman Empire uses javalins as a replacement.  With any luck safer cored javalins will pass the Noble Council (who are also Weapons Marshals)

B. Lorica Segmentata - Commonly thought of when you mention Rome or Legion.  This is also called bandedmail, but was not called Lorica Segmentata by the Romans - it was named later by historians.  There are other types of armour worn by romans.  They wore everything from leather to plate cuirrasses.  However, unless you are a Centurion or above, I expect you to eventually own your own set of lorica segmentata.  The Imperator can help you in that area - don't be afraid to talk to him about it!  If you are a Centurion or above, you may wear any metal armour you like (chain, scale, breastplate, etc.)  If your Darkonian class prohibits metal armour you may then and only then wear leather.  Centurions and above may wear leather under their main armour.

C. Cinculum Militaire - The belt worn by all Romans, but can be adorned however you like.

D. Scutum - The rectangular sheild used by the Roman Legions.  You may not use an oval shield - they are strictly used by the Praetorian Guard.  It is true that historically, the Holy Roman Empire used oval shields almost exclusively - but we're not following history 100%.  I want a strong visible distinction between a Legionairy and a Praetorian.

E. Gladius - The short sword used by the Legions.  It was used in quick thrusting motions for stabbing and hardly ever swung.  Note how it is worn on the right side.  Anyone not of Centurion status or higher will wear thier gladius on the right side.  Legionairres used a reverse thumb grip to draw their swords - this keep their shields from interfering with their draw.
